Still not decided for one platform, with Elektronengehirn I tend to use Ardour on Linux but for Notstandskomitee I still use Logic on Mac. With Jack its easy to route audio from Apple Logic to Pure Data and back. So you can create your own plugins : http://jackosx.com
After you started the Jack server with Jackpilot, you need to select it as audiodevice in Logic to get the routing possibilities. When you activated the autoconnect with physical ports in Jackpilot, a predefined multichannel routing in Logic behaves like before without making changes. Now you can use the in and outputs of Logic to connect to PD, also done in Jackpilot, or use the Jackplugin to insert PD in a channel.
Its also possible to route Midi between applications on OSX. So it has a similar flexibility as Linux which enjoys the blessings of Jack a bit longer.

media lab in Hamburg?

Thinking about setting up a media lab in Hamburg, a hackspace for artistic research. Its badly missed, a lot of people would enjoy but I have no clue how to financiate a permanent space. Founding was impossible already in the last years and its getting worse as Hamburg is out of money which they gave to the banks. It would be my third attempt to create a open media lab here.

bugfixing time!

remember that I wrote about the bug in deStatik? Fortunally I could fix it a while ago. I guess I have the line from the examples of OpenCV where the mainloop is stopped when no frame can captured from the camera. In deStatik the image processing is done in a separate thread and that break statement lead to a simple stop of that routine while the rest of the program continue to run but didn't get any motiondata. It makes sense in examples and debugging sessions but its not good to have break statements in application which have to run 24/7!

But I wonder why it didn't happend in the first place in Graz. It had a month time to show up on two computers.

Anyway, tonight I fixed a small but annyoing bug in Minicomputer, not showing the patch and multinames correctly. So far its in the svn repository only.

at last: realtime shadows on Intel chipset under Linux

With new Xorg Intel drivers and new Mesa I got finally realtime shadows running in OpenSceneGraph on my laptop with GMA965 chip. That makes the difference and change my plans for my upcomming live visualisation for Notstandskomitee performances. Finally my switch to Archlinux has a significant benefit.

The night of the Berlin Wall

I remember when the wall in Berlin came down, for a short while it was not clear whether Germany will be reunited or a new country was born. In the east they created an interims government and it could have been sort of best of both worlds, I watched it carefully and even considered moving there.

But soon it became clear that Kohl wanted to write history as the man who caused the reunited Germany so they pushed it without really thinking about the consequences.

The celebration night in Berlin I perceived with some horror, it was odd with the reoccuring patriotism. I think it was videoartist Björn Melhus who did once a videowork with these pictures, mirroring my feelings of it. With the samples from that broadcast I did at least 2 songs as Notstandskomitee.

deStatic installation acting up

Damn, deStatic installation is acting up. It currently runs allnight at Einstellungsraum Hamburg in the shopwindow but it seems to freeze sometimes. Actually the software is still running but the interaction is gone, i guess it loses contact to the USB cam. Perhaps the electricity is a bit shaky there, causing the USB ports to be underpowerd? Tomorrow I insert an active USB hub, maybe that will do the trick. In Graz it runs on two computers in two different locations, one which is used here in Hamburg too, for weeks without problems.

Ikea and Hamburg

Mit der Ausstellung Verkehrsfluss präsentiert Malte Steiner seine neuste elektronische Installation. Zum ersten mal wird im EINSTELLUNGSRAUM mit 'Augmented Reality' gearbeitet, der reale Raum wird um digitale Informationen erweitert. Mit optischen Markern, die vom Computer erfasst werden, können die Austellungsbesucher mit einem simulierten Verkehrsgeschehen interagieren, welches projiziert ein animiertes Kunstwerk ergibt. Das Jahresthema ist share spaces und hier können im Virtuellen die Konsequenzen stadtplanerischen Handelns erprobt werden.

Malte Steiner arbeitet als Medienkünstler ausschließlich mit Open Source Software. Zur Realisation musste er eine komplett eigene Computerapplikation entwickeln, welche nur durch die Verwendung von quelloffener Programmierbibliotheken möglich wurde.

Geocities closing down

Geocities is closed down today by its owner Yahoo. I don't know if it is something that we will miss but certainly a piece of internet history is taken away. Archive.org tried to preseve as much as they could but Yahoo was very uncollaborative.

Märchengrottenbahn and the last night in Graz

Unfortunately didnt saw the Weltmaschine which we plan to do when we are in Austria next time, hopefully I get invited again. Soon we have to fly back to Hamburg, just checked our flights...

Just learned about the Weltmaschine which is nearby Graz. A farmer visited the Atomium in Brussels and was so impressed that he started to create a machine like, functional artpiece till his death 1981. He never received the attention he deserved.

My installation deStatik runs now in a shopwindow Annenstr. Nr. 8, corner St.Georgen Gasse Graz, too, during the dark hours till 18.October. Lot of documentation waits for being released online and I hope I get it done soon.

Yesterday the PD~Graz Verein had their annual meeting at ESC and eventually I became member.
Tomorrow we will visit IEM.

deStatik in Graz

yesterday was the opening at ESC Graz with my new installation, which runs fine now. Today I have to mount it in the public at an empty shop at corner Annenstrasse/Marschallgasse. It will be rear projected against the shopwindow and bypassers will trigger the interaction. But first I have to get the second computer running. OpenSceneGraph shadows seems to work, at least the shadowing technique I use, and fortunally I use power 2 textures because the ATI seems to reject other textures. Now I have only some problems with the PS3 cam and OpenCV...

Radio Helsinki Graz

Since 24. september I am working at ESC in Graz, Austria, programming a new installation which going to be shown from 9. October till the end of the artfestival Steirischer Herbst.
The installation is going to be projected outside and today I used the nice weather to do some location scouting but so far didn't found the right spot.
Anyway, tomorrow I am going to be at a early show at local station Radio Helsinki from 10:00 am till 12:00 am.
