Elektronengehirn concert video 13. February 2026

Elektronengehirn audiovisual concert Hardware 13. February 2026 as part of Block 4 dialogues I at Toinen Kerros / Äänen Lumo, Helsinki (FI) https://block4.com/dialogues1.php

Malte Steiner initiated Elektronengehirn in 1996 as an experiment to create music exclusively using software-based sound synthesis. The name Elektronengehirn is an old German term from the 1960s for computers, which were then referred to as electronic brains. What sounds trivial today was, back then, a pretty radical idea, especially when one lacked access to the computational resources of institutions like universities. Computer sound synthesis for the masses was in its infancy, and not much was possible in real time. Meanwhile, Block 4 studio added more and more hardware over the years, like the ever-growing Eurorack Modular system since 2002. The album Hardware from 2024 breaks with the initial Elektronengehirn concept and features tracks which are also done with Eurorack modular synthesizer and custom electronic instruments that Steiner has been developing since 2022. During the concert pieces from the album are performed live on computer and DIY modular synthesizer. The Linux computer runs Pure Data for the audio and a custom software created with the game engine Godot for visuals.

Elektronengehirn Piksel 25 concert video online

You can now watch online last weeks Elektronengehirn concert at Piksel 25 Bergen (NO). It was the maximalist version of the concert Hardware with pieces from the same named album: three independent videoprojections (like the 2024 concert in Aarhus (DK)) and quadrophonic sound. The main projection Malte Steiner programmed with the game engine Godot, the side projection comes each from a Raspberry Pi with a C program done with Raylib. Remotecontrol was done from the PureData patch on the main computer via OSC through ethernet cables. Additional sound source was a custom made modular synthesizer system Steiner developed in the past years. This audiovisual concert comes close to his vision of the Gesamtkunstwerk.

Elektronengehirn concert Aalborg 8. November 2025

Elektronengehirn concert 8. November 2025 19:00 at GALLERI NIEMI Østerbro 70 Aalborg (DK)

Malte Steiner is an Aalborg based German visual artist and musician. He began exhibiting and creating electronic music in the early 1980s. In 1996 he initiated the project Elektronengehirn as an experiment to create music exclusively using software-based sound synthesis. The name is an old German term from the 1960s for computers, which were then referred to as electronic brains. What sounds trivial today was, at the time, a rather radical idea - especially for those without access to the computational resources of institutions such as universities. Computer sound synthesis for the masses was in its infancy, and not much was possible in real-time. Initially, Steiner used Csound in non-real-time mode to create complex electroacoustic
soundscapes out of processed field recordings and synthetic sounds. Later, with more powerful computers, he also added Pure Data and Max/MSP to the toolbox and wrote custom software in C/C++.
The album Hardware from 2024 breaks with that concept and features tracks which are also done with Eurorack modular synthesizer and custom electronic instruments that Steiner has been developing since 2022. During the concert pieces from the album are performed live on computer and DIY modular synthesizer.

synth in a suitcase

From the desk of Malte Steiner:

"The current state of my DIY electronics modular synthesizer I developed in the past months, my take on a portable instrument in a suitcase for concerts and jam sessions. Before I develop a Midi interface I first revise the Clockworks gate module with a more flexible second version with variable gate lengths and random mode, based on Arduino. Second half of March I will be in Helsinki and I am open for concerts of my projects Elektronengehirn or Notstandskomitee, or jam sessions."

new Elektronengehirn album Hardware

Elektronengehirn released a new album Hardware on block 4, as download and first time for Elektronengehirn since the 2001 album e/a, in physical form as CD, as hardware.

Malte Steiner initiated Elektronengehirn in 1996 as an experiment to create music exclusively using software-based sound synthesis. Elektronengehirn is an old-school term from the 60s for computers, when they were referred to as electronic brains. What sounds trivial today was, back then, a pretty radical idea, especially when one lacked access to the computational resources of institutions like universities. Computer sound synthesis for the masses was in its infancy, and not much was possible in real time. Initially, Steiner used Csound in non-real-time mode to create complex soundscapes. Later, with more powerful computers, he also employed Pure Data and Max/MSP, which both run strictly in real time.

Meanwhile, block 4 studio added more and more hardware, like the ever-growing Eurorack Modular system since 2002. It became silly to ignore all the equipment and not incorporate it into the electro-acoustic world of Elektronengehirn. With the album 'Hardware,' it was time to break with the original concept and combine all the possibilities: software and hardware, digital and analog, virtual and physical.

b4 DigiDrone

After the successful debut of the b4 DigiDrone synthesizer (pictured below) on two concerts in Helsinki, I am now developing a bigger version for the studio, based on a more powerful microcontroller as the brave Seeed Xiao Samd21 used here.

The source code for the b4 DigiDrone is available on GitHub:
