The Tradwives

Last year Malte Steiner learned that there is an antifeminist movement. Female antifeminists. Further research lead to the art installation The Tradwives: Three color e-paper screens generate and show unsupervised and uncensored collages of material which was data-scraped from Tradwife influencer profiles on Instagram. The material was first decomposed with Machine Learning into smaller bits which within the installation are rearranged to ever changing collages.

Absolute Power: Rewriting History

With my new artproject Absolute Power I analyse and reflect on power structures and the mechanisms behind them. An important method to establish power is to rewrite history, to change the narration. For the piece Rewriting History: I keep Forgetting Faces I created a software which chooses randomly pictures from Wikipedia and erases with the help of Machine Learning the people in it. The best results I paint in oil. These paintings are to be exhibited along with displays showing the process of the removal.

Another part of future exhibitions is a mounted computer with a bi-color e-paper display which in realtime analyses random pictures from Wikipedia, removes people and uses the fragments to compose new pictures:

Elektronengehirn Berlin concert 18.September

On wednesday the 18. September I will perform the first time my piece for modular synthesizer and real estate data with my project Elektronengehirn. The concert will be at Experimentik Berlin, Germany. It is part of my art project The Big Crash. For the soundpiece I created a software which harvest real estate websites for their ads to gather pictures and prices. The pictures are analyzed with Machine Learning software performing an image segmentation and object recognition. The resulting fragments are used in further artpieces of The Big Crash but also serve here as controldata for additive synthesis. The prices and squaremeters of the advertised Berlin flats are used to control an analog modular synthesizer.

Csound on Raspberry Pi

Raspberry Pi + Python + Csound is a good combination, especially with OpenCV thrown in. I created a new instrument by embedding Csound in a Python application which I am going to use on our upcoming TMS concert 29. May in Ii. Steven Yis examples helped me to get started:

"Embedded Artist" is a media performance that combines four different layers merged into one visual entity. As a contemporary Gesamtkunstwerk, 3D models, video scratching, live camera, and mechanical effects are projected and combined within the space. The sound of the performance combines mechanical industrial noise with digital synthetic sound, which create structures and patterns connected to the visual output.
In this performance Spahn and Steiner have developed their own system to control multiple embedded systems using Pure Data, Raspberry Pi, Raspian, and Python, where as hardware components several Raspberry Pi's are combined with Paper-Duino-Pi's remote controlled via OSC from the performers laptops.
The 3D models are animated in OpenGL, where video and live cameras each run on a Raspberry Pi. Mechanical and optical effects such as fragmented projections are generated by servos and glass prisms, which are projected back onto the walls. "Embedded Artist" is filming the audience as well, which are additionally re-projected back into the space.

the first showing of the installation deStatik in Berlin and a concert by Notstandskomitee are in the talks for early October for the Signs Of Dexterity art festival. DeStatik will be shown from 3.- till 5. October, Notstandskomitee performs Sunday the 5. October 19:00 and share the stage with old tape scene buddy C-Drik.

Raspberry Pi, best way to program it?

Continue to experiment with Raspberry Pi, still not decided which software route I should go:
Python, C, C++ with QT, or Java. For me its necessary to have access to the Raspi Cam, accelerated graphics with OpenGL ES and OpenCV. I tried Java8 and followed this steps http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=73489&p=528225 to get it running and it works. Framerate is low but I have to conduct more tests, it seems to run OpenGL accelerated anyway...

Pure Data workshop in Berlin, January

I will provide a Pure Data (http://puredata.info/) workshop for 5 - 20 participants in January in Berlin Kreuzberg (Ritterstr. 3), in two parts, fee for each part is 50.- € including VAT or 80.- € including VAT for both weekends, starting 14:00 till open end:

bugfixing time!

remember that I wrote about the bug in deStatik? Fortunally I could fix it a while ago. I guess I have the line from the examples of OpenCV where the mainloop is stopped when no frame can captured from the camera. In deStatik the image processing is done in a separate thread and that break statement lead to a simple stop of that routine while the rest of the program continue to run but didn't get any motiondata. It makes sense in examples and debugging sessions but its not good to have break statements in application which have to run 24/7!

But I wonder why it didn't happend in the first place in Graz. It had a month time to show up on two computers.

Anyway, tonight I fixed a small but annyoing bug in Minicomputer, not showing the patch and multinames correctly. So far its in the svn repository only.
